The Truth About Root Canals - Down House Dental Practiceroot canal is a treatment where damaged nerve tissue and pulp inside a tooth is removed, with the resulting cavity closed up afterwards. Despite being an entirely routine procedure, there are still many misconceptions surrounding root canal treatment. Here at Down House Dental Practice, we can help dispel the myths, revealing what’s true and false about this treatment.

Myth #1: root canals are extremely painful: FALSE

In truth, root canal treatment is reportedly no more painful than a filling.

Myth #2: root canals make your tooth more sensitive: FALSE

While your tooth might feel sensitive straight after treatment, this can be controlled with over-the-counter medication, and the tooth shouldn’t be sensitive in the long run.

Myth #3: root canals have a high success rate: TRUE

The procedure has a 95% success rate, with many teeth fixed by the treatment lasting a lifetime.

Myth #4: nobody can tell if you’ve had a root canal: TRUE

As a treatment often ends with some kind of restoration such as a crown or filling, it’s extremely discreet.

Myth #5: root canals can lead to complications: TRUE

As with most kinds of treatment, sometimes, unforeseen complications arise – in this case, examples might be a crack in the tooth or a breakdown of dentin in the tooth, which causes bacteria to flood the inner cavity.

Myth #6: root canals are expensive: FALSE

As they have become more routine, these treatments have become more affordable and are far less expensive than others, such as cosmetic dentistry.

Myth #7: you can prevent a root canal from being needed: TRUE

One of the main reasons root this type of treatment is required is because decay has caused the pulp and nerve to become inflamed or infected. Having good oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing, will help reduce the risk, as will regular trips to your dentist or dental hygienist.

Myth #8: an untreated tooth can cause further problems: TRUE

Once the tooth’s nerve and pulp become infected, further complications can arise, such as an abscessed tooth, swelling and even bone loss around the root of the tooth.

This review is for Tesh the hygenist. I honestly can't recommend Tesh more highly. He is incredibly thorough and clearly knows what he's doing. Tesh is so good I have upped the amount of times I see him to every four months rather than every six. He keeps detailed notes of every visit so he can carefully track how I'm doing and help me target specific areas of concern. As I am getting older keeping my gums healthy becomes more important as I really want to keep as many teeth as possible in old age! Tesh is always upbeat, very encouraging and also keen to know how I and my family are doing.
