What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a type of restorative dental procedure used to replace missing teeth. Once the implant integrates with the bone, a custom-made crown is placed on top, resembling a natural tooth.

Who Needs Dental Implants?

Dental implants may be suitable for individuals who have one or more missing teeth and meet certain criteria. People who may benefit from dental implants include:

  1. Individuals with a single missing tooth: Dental implants can replace a single missing tooth without affecting adjacent healthy teeth, unlike traditional bridges.
  2. Those with multiple missing teeth: Implants can support dental bridges or partial dentures to replace several missing teeth effectively.
  3. Individuals with complete tooth loss: Dental implants can provide a stable foundation for full dentures, preventing them from slipping or moving during eating or speaking.
  4. Patients seeking a long-term solution: Dental implants are durable and can last a lifetime with proper care, making them an excellent option for those looking for a permanent tooth replacement solution.
  5. People with good oral health: To be a candidate for dental implants, individuals should have healthy gums and adequate bone density to support the implant.
  6. Those looking for a natural-looking and functional solution: Dental implants closely resemble natural teeth in both appearance and function, allowing for confident smiling, chewing, and speaking.

The procedure of dental implants

Dental Implants in Steyning, Sussex - Benefits and CostThe procedure for dental implants typically involves several stages and may vary based on individual patient needs. Here’s an overview of the general steps involved in the dental implant process:

  1. Initial Consultation: The process begins with an initial consultation with our dentist in Steyning, Sussex. During this visit, your oral health is assessed, and the feasibility of dental implants is discussed. X-rays or 3D scans may be taken to evaluate bone density and structure.
  2. Treatment Plan: Based on the assessment, a personalised treatment plan is developed. This plan outlines the number of implants needed, the type of implant, and the treatment timeline.
  3. Implant Placement: The surgical phase involves placing the dental implant(s) into the jawbone. This is done under local anaesthesia or sedation to ensure the patient’s comfort. The surgeon makes an incision in the gum tissue to access the bone and then drills a hole for the implant. The implant, typically made of titanium, is inserted into the bone, and the incision is closed with stitches.
  4. Osseointegration: After implant placement, a crucial healing period follows. Osseointegration is the process in which the implant fuses with the jawbone. This can take several months and is essential for the implant’s stability and long-term success.
  5. Abutment Placement: Once osseointegration is complete, a small connector piece called an abutment is attached to the implant. The abutment will serve as the anchor for the final restoration (crown, bridge, or denture).
  6. Impressions: Impressions of your teeth and abutment are taken to create a custom-made restoration that will fit seamlessly with your natural teeth.
  7. Final Restoration: The final step involves attaching the custom-made dental crown, bridge, or denture to the abutment. The restoration is designed to match the colour, size, and shape of your natural teeth, providing a lifelike appearance.
  8. Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor the healing process and ensure the implant is functioning correctly. Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial to the long-term success of dental implants.

Dental implants in the upper jaw may come close to sinus cavities. Sinus lift procedures can create space for implants, minimising the risk of interference and ensuring proper placement.

This review is for Tesh the hygenist. I honestly can't recommend Tesh more highly. He is incredibly thorough and clearly knows what he's doing. Tesh is so good I have upped the amount of times I see him to every four months rather than every six. He keeps detailed notes of every visit so he can carefully track how I'm doing and help me target specific areas of concern. As I am getting older keeping my gums healthy becomes more important as I really want to keep as many teeth as possible in old age! Tesh is always upbeat, very encouraging and also keen to know how I and my family are doing.
